MULLINS, SC (WBTW) – American Red Cross volunteers joined by members of the Mullins Fire Department spent their Saturday going door-to-door to install free smoke alarms in homes and educate residents about fire safety.
The campaign is a multi-year effort to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25%.
There are two simple steps that can save lives, installing or checking you have a working smoke alarm and practicing fire drills.
Volunteers say home fires tend to increase in the fall and winter, which is why the Red Cross is making a big push now to be prepared for the months ahead.
“We’re out here today in this community in the hopes that we can save one life even if the resident has to leave there house in the condition as the one behind me,” said American Red Cross volunteer Lou Palm.
American Red Cross volunteers say will be installing 50,000 smoke alarms over the next two years and teaching people how to lessen their chances of suffering from a home fire in the palmetto state.
