MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- The Grand Strand Area Transportation Study and SC-DOT are working on a Transportation Improvement program that will place new Wayfinding signs throughout the region.
GSATS began to study the issue when the Hard Rock Theme Park was opening. Mark Hoeweler with GSATS says at that time city leaders were concerned about traffic congestion and wanted to make sure there was destination signage. It has since evolved into a Wayfinding Project that started in 2014.
The color coded wayfinding signs will be split into three regions: North Myrtle Beach (orange signs) Myrtle Beach (blue signs), South Strand (green signs).
“I guess having those signs would take out some of the guess-work going into it and you’re also not you know wandering around in an area that does not necessarily have tourist attractions. So it sounds like a good idea,” Aleona Sencion a visitor said.
In addition to color coded signs, there will be signs to give information with travel times. You can see some now currently along Highway 501 in Aynor. Project leaders say they try to set them up at points where people have to decide which route to take.
The big goal is to get help visitors get in and out of the area efficiently and once here locate where the attractions are.
“There’s so much happening here every day. I feel like every time when we come back there’s something new that’s happening. Knowing where to go and some sort of guidance I think it very useful in planning a family vacation,” Sencion added.
The long-term plan is for color blocks to match coordinating area street signs in Horry and Georgetown counties. The entire project will cost $2.5 million dollars.
