FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Hundreds of people gathered at Rosenath Farm in Florence Saturday evening for The 5th Annual Keep Florence Beautiful Brew Fest.

The event features a home brewing competition where judges vote on aroma, appearance, flavor, mouth feel, and overall impression.

All funds from the event benefit the community through Keep Florence Beautiful projects and educational awareness programs.

Keep Florence Beautiful is a nonprofit organization intended to engage people to take responsibility for improving their community.

The group’s focus is to improve the visual aspects of the Florence community by supporting litter prevention, waste reduction, recycling, beautification and community greening. The group identifies the causes of litter and reduces it by organizing cleanups and programs that beautify and naturally clean the environment. The programs include community education for responsible consumerism; source reduction; reuse and recycling; community gardens; restoration of vacant lots; highway and shoreline beautification; urban forests, native and wildflower paintings; and graffiti prevention and abatement.

The group’s goal is to encourage the community to become more engaged as citizens and stewards of the environment. Public-private partnerships and volunteer action create broad-based community alliances and allow us to engage the community as a whole, extending the reach of education and multiplying the impact of the group’s actions while strengthening pride in the Florence community.

Rediscover Downtown Lumberton held a clean-up day in the downtown area Saturday morning.

The City of Lumberton anticipates hundreds of cyclists coming through the area next week.

More than 50 volunteers helped tidy up the downtown area. Volunteers included groups of concerned citizens, students, and scout leaders.

Though rainy conditions, volunteers didn’t let it keep them from making sure that downtown was cleaned.

The county provided trash bags to pick up trash and recyclable items from around buildings and water drainages.

Organizers say it was good to see younger people join in to help improve the city.

“As an adult who works with youth, they’re our future, they’re our next generation who’s going to take care of appearance and economic development and so they’re getting a first-hand taste of that,” Executive Director of Communities and Schools Dencie Lambdin said.
