MYRTLE BEACH (WBTW) – Athletes ran, cycled and swam at the second annual Market Common Triathlon in Myrtle Beach on Sunday.

This year the race has been added to the South Carolina Triathlon Series, which helped drew a variety of participants from all over and all ages.

It’s a race that is open to every one ages 5 and up, “and its great because a whole family can come in here and do the race. Kids are doing it,” said Michal Kovac, the male second place finisher for the second year in a row.

The popularity of the Triathlon is part of a bigger trend of sports tourism on the Grand Strand, which attracts people from all over.

11 year old Idris Muhammad made the trip from Atlanta, Georgia with his family to compete in new territory, “I wanted to do an out of town one because I’ve done a lot of ones in Atlanta.”

Muhammad says his dream is to one day be an Olympic athlete, but hasn’t decided if he’d rather be a swimmer or runner in track and field.

An estimated 220 racers participated in the race, which nearly doubles the number from last year.
