HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – An Aynor High School teacher has been arrested on drug charges, according to detention center records.

Horry County Police arrested Robert Dean Johnson, 51, of Galivants Ferry Tuesday for the manufacturing and distribution of crack cocaine. J. Reuben Long Detention Center records indicate Johnson was booked at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday for the alleged crime.

According to arrest report, the Horry County Narcotics Unit was conducting a joint operation with the U.S. Postal Service Inspector.

The report states that officers were investigating a suspicious package at the U.S. Post Office in the Aynor area. A police canine was used during the investigation and gave a positive alert.

After the positive alert, the U.S. Postal Inspector  obtained a federal search warrant for the package. The report goes on to state after opening the package, officers observed one bag of a crystal like substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Around 4:00 Tuesday afternoon, officers on scene saw Johnson walk into the post office and take the package. The report says once he walked out of the building, he was advised of his Miranda rights.

The report goes on to state Johnson told investigators he was picking up the package for himself and it belonged to him. Police say he also admitted to knowing the package contained the drugs

Johnson has since been released under a personal recognizance bond.

Horry County Schools spokesperson Teal Britton says Johnson was hired as a substitute teacher within the school district in 2007. He became a Career and Technology teacher at Aynor High School in 2009.

Britton confirms Johnson was placed on administrative leave Wednesday following his arrest.

Johnson was honored as Aynor High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2012.
