HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – An investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division claims a former book-keeper took thousands of dollars from a local fire department.

The investigation alleges Mary Duffy deposited embezzled funds from the Murrells Inlet – Garden City Fire Department into her personal bank account. Investigators say Duffy got away with more than $83,000.

According to Horry County Solicitor Jimmy Richardson, while Duffy was the fire department’s bookkeeper, bank records for the department could not reconcile with payroll, causing officials to look into the financial records.

The majority of the money, $38,836, came from an impact account, Richardson adds. No one else is believed to be involved.

Duffy died of natural causes on May 7, 2015. The case is considered to be closed and the state won’t pursue legal action.
