BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – Marlboro County sheriff’s deputies are looking for a man they say stole batteries from trucks, sometimes perhaps with the drivers of the vehicles asleep inside.
According to several accounts from deputies, 21-year-old Rashawn Ricktavis Covington stole batteries from trucks parked outside a cotton gin on Fayetteville Avenue, and from a garage in Clio. On another occasion, deputies think he stole batteries from trucks parked at a vacant lot off Highway 15-401 while the drivers were presumably asleep inside the rigs.
Two weeks ago, Marlboro and Scotland County deputies found the vehicle they think Covington used in the crimes parked on King Street in Laurinburg. They also later found most of the stolen batteries in both Scotland County and in Horry County, according to Sheriff Fred Knight.
Covington is described by officials as a black male, standing approximately 5’11”, and 170 pounds. Deputies say he has lived in Clio in the past, but believe he has connections in Laurinburg, also.
Sheriff Fred Knight said his deputies and other agencies are making every effort to find him.
“The financial burden on local business with this type of case well exceeded several thousand dollars,” Knight said.
Anyone with information should call the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office at 843-479-5605.
