FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Florence Police Major Carlos Raines confirms a man escaped from police custody while handcuffed Tuesday morning and the suspect remains on the loose just off of Highway 52.
Major Raines reports that the man drove into a utility pole along Highway 52 near Lucas Street Tuesday morning and left the scene of the crash. Officers later caught up with the driver and arrested him.
While the officer was speaking to a witness regarding the crash, the handcuffed man got out of the police car and ran. Police attempted to track him, but could not locate the suspect.
Although the suspect’s name is not being released, officers say they do know who the man is and do not consider him armed or dangerous. The driver is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and property damage.
