Have You Heard, today (11/1) marks a big anniversary for the U.S. Marine Corps.
Today is the 100th anniversary of when Parris Island (SC) was officially designated a Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
Virtually all female recruits in the nation and all male recruits east of the Mississippi go through basic training at Parris Island.
Parris Island trains about 17,000 recruits a year.
Elton John has hit number-one on the U.S. pop charts nine times.
His fifth number-one was “Island Girl,” and it hit number-one 40 years ago today.
65 years ago today (11/1/1950), two Puerto Rican nationalists, Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola, tried to assassinate President Harry Truman in Washington.
They thought killing the President would advance the cause of Puerto Rican indepedence. They failed on both accounts.
Before they could get to Truman, they got into a gunfight with White House police.
During the gunfight, both Torresola and one officer were killed.
The other officers and Collazo were all wounded but survived.
President Truman actually commuted Collazo’s death sentence one week before the execution date.
Then, in 1979, President Carter commuted Collazo’s life sentence and Collazo went free.
He died in 1994 at the age of 80.
Gary Player turns 80 today.
Player is probably the greatest golfer in history who is not from Europe or the United States.
Player is from South Africa. He won nine major championships.
He’s also designed numerous courses and is generally regarded as one of golf’s nicest players and best ambassadors.
Longtime Congressman John Spratt (D-SC 5th District) turns 73 today.
Apple CEO Tim Cook and former major league pitcher Fernando Valenzuela are both 55 today.
