FLORENCE, SC
A big honor for longtime Francis Marion University president, Dr. Fred Carter.
The school’s board of trustees Thursday named its new health care education building after him.
The Luther F. Carter Center for Health Sciences will open in downtown Florence next fall.
“You know 16 and a half years ago this board gave me one of the best jobs in the state of South Carolina and they continue to do stuff like that and I just can’t say enough about what they do for me and my family on this campus, it’s phenomenal,” said Dr. Carter to News13 about the building naming.
Among other courses, the center will offer masters programs in nursing and help train third- and fourth-year medical students from the University of South Carolina.
The board also approved naming the center’s auditorium for attorney W. Haigh Porter, a former Florence mayor, and a medical simulation lab for retired nephrologist, Dr. Sompong Kraikit.
