FLORENCE COUNTY (WBTW) – Many people in Florence County say they’re worried the county is not working to properly fix many of the roads damaged by the flood a few weeks ago.

Delvert Timmons lives on Meadow Prong Road in Effingham, and he says Thursday morning you could not drive down his road.

“Sometimes it’s a mess for four-wheel drive. It’s so bad, you’ll slip and slide and don’t know whether you’re going to go in the ditch or not. If there’s another car or vehicle coming, you’ve got to set here on this bridge and wait,” said Timmons.

Timmons says crews came later Thursday afternoon to put down dirt and pack the road. He says they’ve done that several times since the flood, and it’s just a temporary fix.

Many people who live on Meadow Prong Road say they’ve contacted Florence Public Works several times asking for help. They say just last week, a school bus slid off the road into a ditch with children inside. Parents say it’s a huge problem, and it needs to be fixed.

Reggie Baxley with Florence County Public Works says since the flood waters went down, they’ve been swamped with road construction.

Bucky Matthews also lives off Meadow Prong Road. He says he was told the road would be paved by the end of the year.

We’ve been told that a long time, but nothing has yet to happen,” said Matthews.

While Baxley didn’t say anything about paving the road, he did say the county is in the process of buying gravel to put down to help when it rains.

He says for now, that’s the best he can do.

Florence County Public Works did not have an exact date for when that gravel would be put down on Meadow Prong Road.

Baxley says he’s working to get the gravel as quickly as possible, and he’s asking people to just be patient.
