DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – The Darlington County School District is considering merging Brunson-Dargan Elementary School and Cain Elementary School into a single school serving students in grades K-5.

Darlington County School District Public Relations Coordinator Audrey Childers says the board wants to explore this plan of action and see if it’s a feasible option for the community.

Brunson-Dargan Elementary houses 3rd through 5th grade and houses approximately 240 students.

Cain Elementary is just a few minutes down the road, it serves 4k to 1st grade and has more than three hundred students.

Childers tells News 13 the students would be housed in a renovated and expanded Cain Elementary School.

The move will save money and create one neighborhood school, according to Childers.

Kerry Washington’s children go to both schools and she supports the idea.

“You have to worry about two different rides to get your child back and forth to school and it takes a lot of time because traffic is really heavy in the morning, and you can’t go but a certain speed. That’s a lot of hassle,” explained Washington.

Childers says that no decisions have been made, but this is an option the board is considering.

The Darlington County School District will have an informational meeting at Brunson-Dargan Elementary School on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
