Have You Heard? – December 11, 2015

Have You Heard, today (12/11) marks 43 years since Apollo 17, which was the last manned mission to the moon, landed on the moon.
The two astronauts, Harrison Schmitt and commander Eugene Cernan, spent three days on the moon’s surface.
They took three moonwalks, totaling more than 22 hours and traveled on the moon (on the lunar rover) more than 22 miles.
Those are both records.
Schmitt later served six years as a republican U.S. Senator from New Mexico. He’s now 80.
Cernan is now 81.

81 years ago today, Bill Wilson took his last drink.
Wilson was from Vermont and had a drinking problem but, after one “treatment” attempt, began to believe his problem was more a medical condition than a moral failing. He was an alcoholic.
A year after his last drink, he and another formed Alcoholics Anonymous.
In 1999, Time magazine named Wilson one of the “100 most important people of the 20th Century.”

David Gates was the lead singer of the 1970s soft rock band Bread. He’s 75 today.

Actress Donna Mills is also 75.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is 72.

Four days after Pearl Harbor, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, 74 years ago today.

Joe DiMaggio announced his retirement from baseball 64 years ago today.

Muhammad Ali fought for the last time 34 years ago today.
It was his 61st fight and it was a loss to Trevor Berbick. 25 years ago

The city of Hartsville, South Carolina, was incorporated 124 years ago today (12/11/1891).

Today is also “International Mountain Day.”
