CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – The federal government is holding public meetings this week to determine industry interest in putting up wind turbines off the South Carolina coast.
The first meeting is Tuesday in Charleston. They will also gather comment on issues that should be studied in environmental studies of offshore wind.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has identified almost 1,200 nautical square miles of ocean with the potential to be leased and is taking comments through Jan. 25.
The largest tract of about 885 square nautical miles is off Myrtle Beach. A tract of about 200 nautical square miles is off Cape Romain with smaller tracts off Charleston and Winyah Bay.
Information meetings are also being held Wednesday in Murrells inlet and Thursday in North Myrtle Beach.
