On Saturday, officers with the Conway Police Department came out to show parents ways to keep their kids safer when on the road.

When small children are belted into their car seats, it’s assumed they are as safe as possible, but making sure seats are properly installed in the back seat is crucial to keeping small passengers safe.

Certified child passenger safety officer Sgt. Don Parker held a clinic to inspect child seats and give safety tips to parents and caregivers.

“We do it then we explain how to do it and then we let them do it for us, so it kind of like gives the caretaker an idea on how to do it when moving from vehicle to vehicle,” said Parker.

Police say one of the most common mistakes parents make is facing the car seat forward too early.

South Carolina recommends waiting until an infant is at least a year old before changing the seating position.
