The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium teamed up with South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources to organize the 27th annual beach sweep Saturday morning.

Thousands of volunteers participated in the state’s largest one day litter pick up at dozens of locations across the state including Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach.

“We have to take care of the environment, we have to make sure it’s here for generations to come.  If we keep throwing trash and things out onto it, we’re hurting the environment so we want to make sure we take care of it,” said volunteer Norman McQueen.

Organizers say nearly 12 hundred tons of litter have been collected and recycled when possible, in the event’s 27 year history.
