MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A local hair salon held a fundraiser Saturday for the American Cancer Society.
It was a chance for people to get a great new hairstyle, while giving back to the community.
Mirage Hair Studio’s 10th annual cut-a-thon gave 100% of the proceeds they raised to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life
Mirage’s owner, Kellie Philo started the event, after her aunt was diagnosed with cancer.
Guests were given great cuts, enjoyed food, giveaways and raffles all to benefit ACS.
Philo began the fundraiser with thoughts of others, but recently her mission became even more personal.
In 2013, Philo, was diagnosed with breast cancer herself. She has gone through chemo therapy and says her recovery wouldn’t have been possible with out the organization’s commitment to finding new ways to treat the disease.
“One of the medications I take was funded by the American Cancer Society research, and it increases my chances of not having a reoccurance by 70%,” said Philo.
Mirage Hair Studio set a goal of $3,000 and they were able to reach it right down to the penny.
Philo says she’ll continue the cut-a-thon next year and into the foreseeable future.
