MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Police say negotiations did not end as they would have hoped for the Myrtle Beach man holed up in his home on Ed Smith Avenue Thursday afternoon.
Horry County Police, SWAT and negotiators were on scene attempting to speak with the man after he threatened to harm himself, police confirm. After hours of negotiation and attempts to keep the man calm, Lt. Raul Denis says the man did in fact fire a shot, wounding himself.
Lt. Denis says negotiators with Horry County Police spoke with the man Thursday afternoon at a home on Ed Smith Avenue. Officers were on scene starting at 10:30 a.m. and just before 1 p.m. said everyone was “accounted for,” and that no one was harmed or in jeopardy at the time, adds Lt. Denis.
SWAT was brought in as a precautionary tactic, and Lt. Denis says the family was also there to help keep the man calm. Police have not released the man’s name or commented on what brought the man to the point of wanting to harm himself.
Lt. Denis confirms the man was taken to a local hospital following the gunshot wound, but the man’s condition was not immediately known.
