MENLO PARK (KRON) – A new feature for Facebook will warn users when the government is hacking their accounts.

Facebook said they will notify users if they believe an account has been targeted or compromised by someone working for the government. Users can then enable two-factor authentication under login approvals.

The company said It will only issue the warning when it has strong evidence. No reaction from the government on Facebook’s announcement.

Alex Stamos is the Chief Security Officer at Facebook posted the following:

While we have always taken steps to secure accounts that we believe to have been compromised, we decided to show this additional warning if we have a strong suspicion that an attack could be government-sponsored. We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts.

Fore more information on the new Facebook feature, you can visit its website for a complete description.

There is action you can take right now to help prevent getting hacked by anyone.

It’s called two-factor authentication.

When you try to login you are sent a code via your phone. You have to enter that code to complete the login process.
