Several streets and nearby yards were under water Wednesday afternoon as heavy rains drenched the city of Mullins. Main Street was also closed for several hours as water crossed streets and flooded businesses.
Wanda Pittman lives on Old Mullins Highway and says the flood waters were nowhere near as high when heavy rains hit much of the Pee Dee just a few weeks ago.
“This here, I aint never seen this before. It just frightened me when I first seen it because I said Lord I don’t wanna drown,” said Pittman.
Several people in the area say today’s flooding brings up questions about the drainage problems around Mullins.
Mike Rollins says the water has nowhere to go because all around the city storm drains are overflowing with water.
“It’s gushing through like it’s a rive back there. You would think this would be a fish creek, but no it’s just mother nature at its finest,” said Rollins.
In 2012, the City received a $500,000 grant to help with the city’s drainage problem. News 13 reached out to the city administrator to see where they stand with the project, but we haven’t heard back.
The Mullins police department and Marion County Sheriff’s Office spent much of the day helping residents evacuate from their homes.

WBTW Stormtracker13 Chief Meteorologist Frank Johnson said more than 3.4 inches of rain fell in Mullins over a 12-hour span. The nearby town of Nichols got nearly seven inches of rain in that same time frame.
The majority of the rain will be out of the Pee Dee later Wednesday night, Johnson said.
